Exposure to the Elelments

Postby mark on Thu Jul 10, 2008 1:55 pm

Under the guidance of of my confessor and help me keep in mind those who need our charity, I spent time last night in the rain, dressed in thin clothes which did not protect me, just short trousers and a t-shirt. It was extremely unpleasant at the physical level - I knelt in the rain on the wet stone at the back of my house, which is not overlooked - but a serious spiritual experience of the power and majesty of our Lord and God, and a humbling reminder of my duties. It made Communion today a very special experience.

I thought people mught find that worth thinking of.

Excellent to read of your exposure to the elements. Reminded me of the stories of the Celtic saints who used to stand up to their necks in water, reciting the Psalter. Just goes to show, you don't have to depend on external items such as a cilice to practice penance, and what ebtter way than using the elements that the good Lord sends us!

Keep up the good work!

I think this must be harder than many more painful penances of shorter duration. I find it humbling just to think of it...

Mark,
I find cold showers very effective. Do you do other "cold" penances too?

When I am tempted by indecent or sinful thoughts or worse still actions I do find cold showers effective.
