I think we can and should accept life itself as a penance. StRose I am sorry that you have had a tough week. We should all pray for you and perhaps offer up (if we have had an easier week) an act of personal extra mortification to keep us in mind of all who are having it tougher than we.

St.Rose wrote:As the title says, when life itself is penance, is it necessary to add extra, voluntary penance? The reason I ask is that this week has been very difficult, as I have been nursing a sick daughter and her children, my husband already has a chronic condition, and now I am ill myself. I haven't added anything to that this week!

What do you do in such circumstances :?:

Oh yes, St. Rose, life can be a penance in and of itself. I heartily agree. And, as a mother, my heart goes out to you. Being divorced, I have no ill husband to care for, but I know what caregiving is like. And how hard it is, putting others first when one is barely surviving oneself. Personally, I think there is no more honorable 'vocation' than taking care of others. It is very counter culture these days -- contra mundi.

God bless you, St. Rose, and give you abundant grace for your trials!

Voluntary penance is necessarry if one is to advance in the spirtual life.We are all called to carry our cross.Penance helps us to do that.

Yes, brothercrucified, you are right. But sometimes just getting through the day is difficult enough. When a brother or sister is suffering greatly, it is also good to remember that God Himself is merciful, and His Mercy is even greater than His Justice. I don't mean this in a presumptuous way, but I'm counting on it!

BTW, nice to meet you!!
