Work a day penance

Discussion regarding all matters penitential (incl. cilice, discipline, hairshirt etc)

Work a day penance

Postby trenchtown on Sat Mar 29, 2008 6:53 pm

Following on from a different thread: I use a discipline, which is hard to use during the day whilst at work. What experience do others have of corporal mortification during the working day?

Just do it before and after work... and maybe during lunch...

I find it most beneficial when you're surrounded by the world at work, which is why I feel I need to wear the cilce or hairshirt for some of each day at work.

Only guessing here but I would imagine that a leg cilice that stays on, without fear of it falling off, whilst in an office environment, if thats where you work, would have to be placed very high on the leg and be very tightly secured. I would worry about it falling off or something. What about an arm cilice or a crucifix cilice?

It happened to me! I had not fastened it tight enough, as I was still getting used to it at the time, and so it slid down my leg, to appear at my foot. Fortunately, I was able to sort it before anyone noticed. I now make sure that it is tight enough for this not to happen...

:D I can just imagine.. clunk, clink, clunk, clink as the chain dangles around your foot. Can you imagine the confused look on your colleagues faces if they saw? Bless them.

The thing is, I don't think that they would be that surprised really...

Hi St .Rose

I use the Cilice for Friday Penance. I start with saying the Angelus in front of a crucifix and then go about my normal business around the house for the next two hours and then finish again with the Angelus.

I dont think that i could leave the house and do my business wearing a Cilice.
