Re: Know any good UK charities?

I think western societies treatment of our elders and those that nurtured us into this world is generally lamentable. Therefore I would nominate whatever organisation in your region does the most valuable work for the care, support and invigoration of the elderly in your community.

Re: Real Catholics

Just to try and bring this back on to topic. Perhaps the idea of a Real Catholic is someone who is not a "Sunday Catholic". Someone who tries to practice the principles in all their affairs. As a relatively new member of the church, and nowhere near as dedicated as members of Opus Dei, I ...

Re: Closest to God

My relationship with God is strongest when I am serious in my endeavours to meet with him. When my pride is reduced, when I perceive my life correctly, when I am neither joyous nor depressed. I ask God to show me his will, to give me direction. I humbly ask him to put me on the firing line of life s...

Re: Sensible suggestions

I travel widely for my work and find I need very little to sustain myself in what i consider to be relative comfort. I hear that I am considered ascetic by those I have dealings with. When I return home I find myself somewhat lost in my wordly posessions and wonder if it damages the lines of communi...

Work a day penance

Following on from a different thread: I use a discipline, which is hard to use during the day whilst at work. What experience do others have of corporal mortification during the working day?

Re: Hairshrts

I forgive you Ollie.

I would imagine a cilice chain would be something you could wear under clothes.

Re: self flagellation

I dont have much money, so I use a cord I found around my house.. I use it the same way I would use the things purchased on this site.. Does it matter that it isn't professionally made? Or should I just buy one? The discipline I use was purchased and made by nuns and it was a concious decision not ...

Re: Easter Blessings!

Especially during this Easter period, I try to remember the suffering of Christ on my behalf. Like you Ollie, I find myself thinking of Christ's humanity more today than any other. Easter Blessings to you all.

Re: The harder you try...

If I am grateful for the great blessings the Lord bestows upon me I find it easy to combat the devil, I recoil from his temptations as if from a hot flame. In fact, it is these great blessings that could be my downfall. In that way, 'The harder I try' (as per Bro.Paul) can indeed sow the seeds for m...

Re: Hairshrts

Maybe the cilice chain (or cilix as you say mark) is the compromise I am seeking, although 'compromise' does not quite seem the word for such matters.
