I strongly agree with the second point. My nephew of 21 has suffered severely from temptation in this area and now wears a rope around his neck and between his legs on many days. Welcome exoriente into the community of penance. I agree that anything which forces us to obey the rule about custody of the eyes, keeping eyes down to the ground and head bowed whenever possible, is really important. I would welcome anyone's experience of how to do this.

Could I suggest one thing that is not quite a penance but I have found powerful on days such as yours? Refrain from receiving the blessed sacrament at Mass at the start of the day. Your day of penance may well mean that you are more aware of your tendencies towards sin and it is perhaps better to r...

Being in a State of Mortal Sin

I have been told in confession that I need to be more alert to the dangers of not being in a state of grace and not automatically feeling comfortable with simply noting a sin a leaving it to the next regular confession. I ought to have a more sincere sense of contrition and extra penance during days...
