Re: Exposure to the Elelments

Excellent to read of your exposure to the elements. Reminded me of the stories of the Celtic saints who used to stand up to their necks in water, reciting the Psalter. Just goes to show, you don't have to depend on external items such as a cilice to practice penance, and what ebtter way than using t...

Re: Pride and Penitence

If Christ could lower Himself to be born in a stable, then I think that He would understand your actions in a cubicle... And, after all, we are called to be His servants at all times and in all places...

Re: Monastic Diurnal

There may not be much difference between the Monastic and Roman Diurnal, as each will probably contain the Hours of Matins, Lauds, Prime, Terce, None, Sext, Vespers and Compline. The Prayer Book you are using at the moment will no doubt take a little from each to produce the prayer times you mention...

Re: Work a day penance

Give it time, St Rose, and you'll get there in the end. In the meantime, the trouble this causes only makes the journey the more productive in the long run... Needless to say though, I trust that your leg heals soon!

Re: The harder you try...

Dear, St Rose,

Be assured that you are in my prayers and I will remember you before the Throne of God.

Just hang in there and stick with it.

Every blessing,

Re: Favourite Spiritual Movies

Avernus wrote:The Mission - a film about an 18th century Catholic mission in Portuguese South America. Very moving, and inspirational. It also focuses on penance for a large section of it.

I watched this film on my 16th Birthday, and it has stayed with me ever since...

Re: Why not introduce yourself?

For this reason, I have been struggling with a clear and consistent inspiration in regard to this form of penance and prayer. Your struggle in this is helped already by the very fact that you link penance with prayer. For, it does not matter what kind of corporal mortification we engage in if we...

Re: Discipline / Cilice why ?

Alas, I cannot give a striaght answer on this one, as I use both methods... I use the cilice, and a hair shirt, on a daily basis. The cilice is worn for two hours, while the shirt all day. The former acts as a heightened sense of awareness, while the hair shirt provides a more sutle method of center...

Re: self flagellation

I now have a whole summer off with no university classes, so this is a good time to get focused. My first intention is to begin a program of fasting. It's been too long since I fasted seriously. Do you, or anyone here, have any thoughts about fasting? Have any of you combined the discipline with ...
